Experienced Souls

It’s true, we both know, as experienced souls
The valley’s not always in bloom
But each winter still brings
The promise of spring
And a heart that by love is consumed

Are we different, of course
Two journeys we’ve made
Two lives on paths never crossed
But together we roll
The dice in a dream
Of a destiny not to be lost

Of you I will ask but one simple thing
The essence of which you’ll agree
Is the foundation upon
What the future may bring
And the pasts we’ll try to set free

It is simply the truth
Can you share it with me
Can you be just that that you are
Will I see in your eyes
The promise up close
That I saw when I looked from afar

For it’s true, we both know, as experienced souls

Shallow Waters

Shallow waters awash in weary waves
Of spent and rippled rows
Doth speak of sleepy shores
With neither depth nor stirring prose

But hear the din of crashing seas
To revel in the sound
That whips the will with shuddered thrills
Those boundless, bold and brown

Not lingered in a passive stroll
Nor fraught with sullen sail
The ocean wind’s unbridled sin
‘Tis freedom un-curtailed

Arrive and take ye o’er the mast
To mend thy wounded sails
And feel thy heaven’s glory great
In ever glowing gales

Fading Grace

The fading grace of a soft summer’s eve
O’er the cliffs of Chesapeake Bay
That beckoned within, forlorn as he grieved
The young man of a yesteryear day

When the moments that colored the canvas of youth
Bore the unabashed bounties of May
And each beat of his heart entwined with the truth
That mere time would not sweep them away

Yet there on his cheek, with a rust rippled hue
Lay the day as it came to its close
And with the sun’s set, the tears, for he knew
He’d not be there again when it rose
